Lucius Beebe Memorial Library
The Trustees of Beebe Library seek a director who will promote lifelong learning throughout our community of 25,000 residents. Key to the success of our director will be the desire to anticipate the needs of the community and encourage the staff to do likewise.
We are an economically diverse town twelve miles north of Boston. The library, an anchor building between a lake and the downtown, serves about 800 visitors daily and enjoys good relations with the business community, schools, civic groups, and local government. The municipally funded $1.5 million annual budget includes staff costs for fourteen full time and twenty-nine part-time employees (22FTE), maintenance of a 28,000 sf building, and materials for a collection of 125,000 items. An active Friends of the Library group augments the operating budget, as do gifts and fundraisers. In tandem with the Chamber of Commerce, the library holds an annual gala fundraiser. The library is a member of the North of Boston Library Exchange, an excellent library consortium that provides technology and resource sharing capabilities.
Patrons describe Beebe Library as warm and welcoming. Despite the elegance of the building, patrons describe it as being homey. A staff that assumes professional leadership positions in the region is regarded locally as being friendly and helpful. The ambiance of the library emanates from the values of the staff and the decisions they make regarding patron services, policies and procedures, and interior design. Both hospitality and achievement are distinguishing characteristics of our organization.
Challenges include optimizing the use of limited but flexible space in a 28,000 sf building, encouraging staff to anticipate new needs and roles, and driving a culture of excellence, accountability, and continual learning.
Minimum qualifications include an MLS from an ALA accredited school and ten years of progressively responsible experience, some of which may be in related fields. To be successful, the library director will have experience with budget development and administration, personnel management, collective bargaining and contract administration, library technology, public purchasing and facility maintenance, and Board and municipal government relations.
