Ransomware is now a billion dollar industry worldwide. Libraries, hospitals, banks, law firms, and other institutions have all been subject to the unique “data hostage taking” scenario. Further, the world was put on notice of its prominence when the ransomware attack called WannaCry had a massive global impact. What does ransomware do when it attacks an institution? What results when the attack is over and how does the law protect the library or its patrons? Join Kyle K. Courtney in a discussion around the technology and law surrounding the ransomware debate. In this interactive session, we will discuss library risk (and rewards) in having a broader understanding of how technology, data, and library assets can be protected, as well as any legal consequences from a breach or ransomware attack.
User authentication based on Internet Protocol (IP) addresses has been used in nearly all libraries for decades. It gives users unmediated access to library electronic resources, but is a key problem in our growing security issues. Speaker Rich Wenger will examine some of the problems associated with IP filtering, suggest changes, and explore the work being done to find a better and more secure solution. He will share one alternative, the RA21 initiative, for which he has served on the steering committee.
Many of our vendors are developing their own alternatives to IP filtering. EBSCOHost has been working with the OpenAthens, a Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) standard for user authentication. A representative from EBSCOHost will speak to us to explain more about how SAML works and share OpenAthens as their supported standard.
