Librarian, as a member of the library team, provides services to support the youth department patrons’ use of the library resources and services, promotes and implements programs for youth throughout the year, including the summer reading program, and supports the library’s mission. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with children, have empathy for their interests and needs, and a dedication for advocating for them. Sense of humor, passion for learning and teaching, and knowledge of children’s literature and S.T.E.M. programming are essential. Experience incorporating creative uses of music, movement, and art into programming preferred. This position requires organization, discipline, flexibility, and teamwork.

• Works with Youth Services Director to plan and organize programs and events.
• Provides reader’s advisory service for children, young adults, teachers and parents. Assists customers in selection of appropriate reading material.
• Familiarity with print and electronic literature for preschool, elementary-aged children, and teens.
• Creates and disseminates library marketing materials including email newsletter, social media posts, and web posts. Edits press releases and newspaper articles with attention to details and accuracy.
• Assists in identifying sources of outside funding, such as grants.
• Keeps up to date with new trends in public services and library practices as related to children and teens.
• Participates in professional meetings to strengthen skills, interact with fellow professionals, and to contribute to the profession.
• Conducts multiple story times, Saturday events, S.T.E.M. programming, and other events or programs as needed.
• Participates in the daily activities of the library, including circulation.
• Shall demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development.
• Shall perform other related duties as requested by the Youth Services Director and/or Library Director.
• Comfortable with heavy program load during peak times of year such as vacation weeks and able to deal with multiple unexpected tasks calmly and efficiently during busy periods with frequent interruptions.
• Minimum of two years experience working as a library assistant, teacher, or as an assistant in a busy, complex, office environment requiring multi-tasking, customer service and ability to work independently.
• Minimum of two years experience working with computer software applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Demonstrated good communication skills (verbal, writing, spelling).
• Four-year college degree required and experience working in a public library preferred. Degree with a major in education or other combination of education and relevant library experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new technical skills, changing library technology, and library resources.
• Ability to troubleshoot patron issues with public computers, printers, and wireless devices.
• Ability to take lead responsibility for areas of specialization.
• Ability for high degree of accuracy working with detailed data in print, non-print and digital data.
• Valid driver’s license and vehicle.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
• Be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
• Ability to serve and communicate effectively verbally with a variety of library patrons and assist them to use library resources.
• Ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks, and perform tasks with minimum of supervision.
• Ability to search internet and online databases, create and maintain web pages.
• Experience using an integrated library system.

Works in office, library and/or school environments which are subject to uncomfortably warm or cool temperatures. Continuous intellectual effort is required to maintain a current knowledge of library resources, intellectual development, literature and information resources. The work requires lifting print and other materials, equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, and being able to carry a reasonable quantity of materials from place to place, including using stools or ladders to retrieve or place materials in high places. On a regular basis, meeting room chairs need to be moved, stacked and wheeled.
This position is currently 32 hour/week with paid time off. Two nights per week and two Saturdays a month are required. The position has potential to be 40 hours/week in 2020 with a full benefits package.
Starting Salary: $16.00 – $19.00 depending on experience.
