Membership Advantages: As NELA members we receive special conference rates. NELA is now extending the same special rates to members of ACRL (New England Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries). They offered us reduced rates in the spring and we are returning the favor for the fall. If you or someone you know is a member of NELA or ACRL, be sure to check the members rate when you send in your conference registration.

News from the New England States

Connecticut – In spite of the continuing drama over a budget approval for the state in the coming fiscal year, libraries continue to serve their constituents and the library profession. Library business is booming, with double-digit increases in most categories of library use. Continuing ed opportunities over the summer include several training sessions for job-search services, and CLC will introduce the JobNow! interactive resource from Brainfuse to subscribing libraries shortly. Several busloads of CT librarians attended Book Expo in New York City in May. CLC will also sponsor a one-day management conference in August.

CLA welcomed new President Randi Ashton-Pritting from the University of Hartford along with other new Executive Board members at its June meeting. The summer issue of CT Libraries, CLA’s newsletter, will once again highlight the contributions of colleagues who have left us during the past year.

Massachusetts – MLA recently completed a survey of personnel issues. Results and information about survey can be found at: www.masslib.org/personnelcommittee/09mlapcsurveyresults.pdf.

As previously reported, Massachusetts is still accepting orders for a MA library license plate with proceeds to benefit public, academic, special and school libraries across the state that belong to a Regional Library System. Details can be found at http://www.cmrls.org/plates_public.htm.

Maine – Sonja Plummer-Morgan took over as president of the Maine Lib. Assoc 7/01/09. She is from Presque-Isle Maine. She has already sent an e-mail to our NELA president and is excited to work with NELA to benefit both organizations.

The news from the Maine State Library is not good with the cut in state funds. The state library begins the new fiscal year with a cut of 4-1/2 staff members and a cut of $330,000 in budget. Needless to say, the state library will be stretched to the max getting services to Maine Libraries.

New Hampshire – the NHLA Spring conference 2009 audio recordings of programs and video recordings of keynote speakers have been posted on the NHLA website. The 2010 NHLA Spring Conference will be held once again at the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel on May 13th and 14th.

Nominations are being solicited for the READS Award of Excellence, given to a New Hampshire librarian chosen for outstanding service in the fields of reference and adult services. Recommendations are also being sought for the Ann Geisel Award of Merit, given to an individual, group or organization that has made significant contributions to the New Hampshire library community.

Rhode Island – no report.

Vermont – The VLA Board attended a retreat on Wednesday, August 5th at St. Michael’s College.
