Membership Renewal

Membership Renewal notices have been mailed. Watch for yours and don’t miss your opportunity to continue receiving news about NELA and libraries all over New England. Beginning with this renewal, NELA is shifting from a calendar year membership to an anniversary date renewal system. The date we receive your membership payment will become your anniversary date.

If you have friends or co-workers who would like to join NELA, check out the Member-for-a-Member Program and get a coupon for yourself good towards reduced dues or conference fees.

NETSL Award for Excellence in Library Technical Services

NETSL (New England Technical Services Librarians) is looking for nominations for the annual NETSL Award for Excellence in Library Technical Services which will be presented at the NETSL Annual Spring Conference 2010: Crosswalks to the Future, April 15, 2010, at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.

The NETSL Award recognizes and honors significant New England-based contributions to the field of library technical services. Contributions may have been made in New England by librarians from throughout the United States, or nationally by librarians residing in New England, through publications, service, or innovations in practice. The NETSL Executive Board members select a recipient at their February meeting based on nominations received. The Board reserves the right to suspend the Award for a year if no suitable candidate is nominated. More information is available at nelib.org/netsl/award.htm

NERTCL: It's Not Just a Fantasy: Putting Fantastic Fiction to Work

NERTCL (New England Roundtable of Teen and Children’s Librarians) will sponsor a program on April 23; It's Not Just a Fantasy: Putting Fantastic Fiction to Work. Speakers for this event are authors Sarah Thomson and T.A. Barron and Simmons GSLIS professor Melanie Kimball. Mark your calendars and watch for details of location, time and more.

ITS “Non-print” Book Formats

ITS (Information Technology Section) will present a spring program on “Non-print” Book Formats. These include Sony Readers, Kindles, e-books, downloadable audiobooks, vooks (text with embedded video), etc. The tentative date is Friday, June 11th and location TBA.

Wanted: Great Librarians!

Nominations are now being accepted for the New England Library Association’s 2010 Emerson Greenaway Award to recognize individuals who have had a demonstrated impact on the library field in the New England region.

Established by NELA in 1988, the award honors Emerson Greenaway, an innovator in library organization and practice in the 1940's and 1950's. Mr. Greenaway received the first award, and subsequent recipients include Eleanor Hashem, Donald Vincent, Ann Flowers, Richard Olsen, Ching-Chi-Chen, Liz Futas, Anne Reynolds, Patricia Klinck, Marshall Keyes, Margo Crist, Kris Kardokas, Shirley Adamovich, Lillian Edelmann, Nolan Lushington, Lucy Gangone, Melody Allen, and now Ken Wiggin.

Nominees must be, or have been, members of NELA. She or he should have made a major contribution to the field of librarianship in New England, such as:

  • Development of outstanding services in a field of expertise, such as administration, reference services, technical services, etc.
  • Involvement with developing library cooperation in New England,
  • Outstanding leadership in the field.

Meet 2009 Greenaway Award Recipient Kendall F. Wiggin

Ken Wiggin is an outstanding library leader in Connecticut, across the region, and across the nation. Since 1998, Ken has served as the State Librarian for Connecticut, directing the development and administration of library programs and services from his Hartford office at the Connecticut State Library. His leadership has brought several important initiatives to the State Library and the entire Connecticut library community including iCONN, the Connecticut Education Network, the Historical Documents Preservation program and Connecticut History Online. Ken has improved the State Library's reputation with the Connecticut library community, the Governor, the Legislature, other state agencies, and other education and history partners. Need money for library school? Did you know that NELA offers scholarships for New England residents working on a Master’s degree in Library Science? Well, we do - two scholarships each for full and part-time students, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. Interested?
